What Happens When We Make a Mistake and How We Respond

REMODELING TIPS | 1626 CONSTRUCTION

By 1626 Construction | Serving Austin, Buda, Kyle, Dripping Springs, and San Marcos

No contractor will ever tell you they are perfect. Any company that claims otherwise has either done very little work or is not being straight with you. At 1626 Construction, we have been doing this long enough to know that mistakes happen in remodeling. What separates a trustworthy contractor from an unreliable one is not whether mistakes occur. It is what happens next.

This post is about exactly that. How we handle it when something goes wrong, what our process looks like, and why we believe owning our mistakes is one of the most important things we can do for our clients and our reputation.

Mistakes Are Part of Construction

Remodeling is a skilled trade, but it is also a complex process with a lot of moving parts. You have multiple crew members on a job, subcontractors coordinating around each other, materials that sometimes arrive damaged or incorrect, and existing conditions inside walls and floors that nobody could have predicted. Even with years of experience, planning, and attention to detail, things can go sideways.

A tile gets set out of square. A measurement gets transferred wrong. A subcontractor installs something in the wrong location. These are real situations that happen across the industry. What we control is our response to them.

We Catch It First Whenever Possible

Our first line of defense is our own quality checks during the build. Everyone in our crew inspect work as it progresses, not just at the end. When we catch something that does not meet our standard, we fix it before you ever see it. That is how it should work, and it is the norm on our jobs, not the exception.

We would rather slow down for a day to redo something correctly than rush past a problem and have it come up during your final walkthrough or after you have moved back in. Speed is not the goal. Getting it right is the goal.

When You Notice It, We Want to Hear About It

Sometimes a client catches something before we do. Maybe you stopped by the job site and something looked off. Maybe you noticed it during a walkthrough. Whatever the case, we want to know about it immediately, and we mean that.

We do not get defensive. We do not make you feel like you are being difficult for pointing it out. You are paying us to do the job right, and if something is not right, that is a problem we want to fix. Call us, text us, or bring it up in person. We will come look at it the same day whenever possible.

Our Response Process

When a mistake is identified, here is how we handle it:

•       We acknowledge it. We do not minimize what happened or try to reframe it as intentional. If we got it wrong, we say so.

•       We assess it. We look at the full scope of the issue so we understand exactly what needs to be corrected and what it affects downstream.

•       We present a solution. Before we touch anything, we tell you what we are going to do to fix it so you know the plan.

•       We fix it at our cost. If it is our mistake, it comes out of our pocket, not yours. We do not pass the cost of our own errors on to clients.

•       We follow up. After the correction is made, we check back in to make sure you are satisfied with the result.

We Do Not Pass the Cost to You

This one matters a lot. There are contractors out there who make a mistake and then try to work it into a change order or quietly absorb the cost in a way that affects other parts of your project. We do not operate that way.

If we  have to demo it and redo it, that labor and material cost falls on us. Our clients should not pay for our mistakes, and they do not.

Why We Talk About This Openly

Most contractors would rather not bring up the subject of mistakes at all. We put it on the table because we think it builds trust. When you hire 1626 Construction, you are not hiring a crew that is going to pretend everything is always perfect. You are hiring a team that is going to take ownership when something goes sideways and make it right without putting you through a battle to get there.

That is the kind of contractor you want in your home. One who stands behind their work not just when things go well, but especially when they do not.

What Our Clients Say

Our Google reviews tell this story better than we can. Clients mention that when issues came up during their projects, we communicated clearly and resolved them quickly without making them feel like they were asking for too much. That is exactly the experience we aim to deliver every time.

If you'd like to see what it's like to work with us, feel free to check out our Google Business Profile. Many of our clients come back to us for additional projects year after year, and we're incredibly grateful for the trust they continue to place in us.
